SUMMARY:Dragonflies to Diatoms
DESCRIPTION:Our wildlife officer\, Rebecca Porter will be joined by special guest Prof Genoveva Esteban\, a microbial ecologist from Bournemouth University\, for pond dipping with a difference. We are a Site of Nature Conservation Interest for our dragonflies due to the fact half the UK species are believed to breed here. The adult dragonflies are monitored every week during the summer but we have never looked for the larvae during the underwater part of their life cycle or indeed at the diversity of other smaller insect larvae they may feed on. With Genoveva’s help\, we will have a unique opportunity to delve to the bottom of the food chain and explore the extraordinary diversity of the microbes (diatoms and more)\, impossible to see without a microscope. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Friday the 6th of March\n  \nTwo time slots are available:\n  \n10.00am – 12.30pm\n  \n13.30pm – 15.30pm\n  \nSpaces are limited to 8 people.\n  \nClick below to secure your place!\n  \nThis event is strictly for attendees aged 14 and over.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Book - Morning Slot\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Book - Afternoon Slot

SUMMARY:Introduction to Lichens Tour
DESCRIPTION:Lichens are sometimes called lichenised fungi because they are mostly made up of a fungus that harbours cells\, either algae or cyanobacteria\, within their structure. Join our Wildlife Officer\, Rebecca Porter for this special tour of the diverse lichens we have around the park. She will introduce you to the three main structural types; foliose (leafy)\, fruticose (bushy) and crustose (crusty) as well as several more unusual forms. Then\, how to identify which of several strategies each lichen uses to reproduce the all important partnership will be covered as well as other identification features. As well as visiting some of our champion lichen-clad trees\, we will be on the hunt for the most obscure places lichens manage to frequent! \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 4th of March – 10.00am – 12.30pm\n  \nSpaces are limited to 8 people.\n  \nClick below to secure your place!\n  \nThis event is strictly for attendees aged 14 and over.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Book Here

SUMMARY:Winter Tree Tour: Our Native Trees
DESCRIPTION:Winter is a time to appreciate the architecture of our native trees\, which is more evident when they have no leaves. But\, they are not necessarily naked\, in late winter\, with catkins about to open and some of last year’s fruits still hanging. Some of our trees\, such as English Oak\, Ash and Horse Chestnut\, are inherited but the park embraces our connection to our natural history and many trees planted since 2007 are native Silver Birch\, Hornbeam\, Aspen\, Hazel and Hawthorn. \nRebecca Porter\, our Wildlife Officer will take you on a tour of our native trees\, considering their historical uses\, tell you stories of their weird and wonderful relationships with insects they support or depend upon and discuss survival and adaption to the wetland habitat they live in. \nThe tour will end in the pod last where there will be an opportunity to meet local artist Stephen Bithell who will embellish the curious connection between Oak trees\, an insect\, humans and history. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 25th 0f February – 10.00am – 12.30pm\n  \nSpaces are limited to 8 people.\n  \nClick below to secure your place!\n  \nThis event is strictly for attendees aged 14 and over.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Book Here

SUMMARY:Winter Tree Tour: Conifer Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our Conifer Collection is one of the central focusses of our Botanic Garden at Sculpture by the Lake. Of the estimated 60\,000 tree species in the world\, only 650 are conifers. This is because conifers are relics of evolution and had their heyday before the dinosaurs. For this reason many of our conifer collections are rare in the wild and some are under threat of extinction” \nOur first winter tree tour will take you back in history to the extraordinary bravery\, rivalry and pitfalls of the pioneer botanists of the 18th and 19th centuries who discovered many of the conifer species we rely on\, commercially\, today. In more recent years\, conifers only thought to exist as fossils have been found alive and rescued from the brink. The most exciting discoveries\, though\, are more scientific\, regarding the fascinating ways some conifers are adapted to nutrient-poor or water-logged soil\, and are prepared for wind\, and fire. There could be many reasons we still need conifers in the future. A key role of a botanic garden\, is to understand what trees will grow best\, with rising temperatures and increased adverse weather conditions. \nWe’ll end up in the Pod last\, with Andrew Lawrence\, our palaeontologist colleague who will bring in some fossils of plants to take us back to the deep past. Trees we might now think of as non-native might actually have lived closer to home once upon a time! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 18th of February – 10.00am – 12.30pm\n  \nSpaces are limited to 8 people.\n  \nClick below to secure your place!\n  \nThis event is strictly for attendees aged 14 and over.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Book Here

SUMMARY:Paintings for the New Era of Innocence\, an Exhibition by Fernando Velázquez
DESCRIPTION:  \nFernando Velazquez\, Moon\, 50 x 50 cm\, Oil on canvas\n  \n  \nIn Paintings for the New Era of Innocence\,  Fernando Velázquez presents a new body of work that stands as a quiet yet powerful act of resistance against acceleration\, inhumanity\, and the rising dominance of artificial intelligence. These paintings champion the handmade\, revealing fragility\, patience\, and process whilst asserting the enduring value of human touch in an increasingly mechanised world. \n\nOpening on Saturday 14th February – all are welcome from 10am – 5pm. \nFernando will be present from 11am to 3pm.

SUMMARY:Rest\, Relax and Reset Day Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In the chaos of our daily lives\, we’re constantly being pulled in a million different directions and stretched so thin that our stress levels are too high and we end up in a persistent state of fight or flight. We crave some rest and relaxation\, so that we can feel restored and rejuvenated and this is what this retreat is all about! We will combine various modalities to help you calm the mind and the body and teach you some that you can do at home to help you reduce stress and relax. \n\n\n  \nSOMA Breathwork\n\nOur retreat begins with an invigorating SOMA Breathwork session. The SOMA Breath Energized Meditation Routine is a 1-hour long workshop combining movement\, chanting and breathwork all guided with uplifting\, music. The Energized Meditation Routine is designed to release tension from the body\, boost your mood\, and be a super-effective breathwork meditation. \n  \n\nSharing Circle and Cacao Ceremony\n\nThe Sharing circle provides a space for us to come together\, share our experiences\, and connect with each other.Cacao is a perfect plant for anxiety\, as it brings natural stress relief. By directly connecting to our nervous system\, it triggers dopamine and the endorphin\, ‘Anandamide’\, two essential neurotransmitters that make us feel blissed out and loved up. \n  \n\nIntroduction to Meditation\n\n\nAn introduction to meditation and mindfulness practices that can help calm the mind. \n  \nLunch\n\n\n\nA light and delicious vegetarian lunch will be provided using many ingredients from our own kitchen garden. \n  \n\n\nYoga Nidra\n\nYoga Nidra is a guided meditation rooted in ancient yogic traditions that follows a systematic relaxation process. Researchers who have studied it have found that the brain goes into a unique state where it is asleep\, while we’re actually awake and conscious. Apart from being deeply relaxing\, being in this state also unlocks several mental\, physical\, and emotional benefits. \n  \n\n\nSound Bath\n\nTo end the day Simon will create a sound journey to lead you deeper into a state of contemplation and relaxation. A sound bath is typically a way of managing anxiety\, soothing the nervous system\, and blocking all the ideas and thoughts out of your consciousness as you connect with your body. Sound enters the healing equation from several directions: It may alter cellular functions through energetic effects; it may entrain biological systems to function more homeostatically; it may be calm the mind and therefore the body; or it may have emotional effects\, which influence neurotransmitters and neuropeptides\, which in turn help to regulate the immune system—the healer within. \n  \n\n\nTea and Dates\n\nBefore you leave\, we will serve a treat of herbal tea and dates so you can quietly contemplate your experiences and set your intentions for your continued wellbeing. \n\n  \n  \nReserve your place here:

SUMMARY:Work On Paper Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to be welcoming Penny back to the gallery for a demonstration of her cut paper collage work\, marking the Opening for the new Work on Paper exhibition.\n  \nPenny’s creativity uses cut paper in collage and creates images that are both botanically accurate and have strong visual appeal. She starts with careful observation of the subject plant\, making sketches\, colour notes and recording the rhythm and energy of the growing plant.  The process of assembly for the image involves cutting and layering plain papers in a complex\, subtle way to achieve an effect reminiscent of 1930s silk screen prints\, but with strong contemporary appeal. The natural world and particularly the glorious Dorset countryside are a constant source of inspiration which she loves to share. Her most recent work explores Dorset landscapes in collage\, sometimes including native wildflowers but often just focusing on the rich contrasting colours and shapes of the marvellous Dorset countryside. \nCome along to the gallery\, watch and chat with Penny as she designs\, cuts\, paints and assembles the pieces\, gradually building up the composition until the landscapes and plants become vividly three dimensional. \n  \n11/10/2026 – 11am – 3pm

SUMMARY:Julie Oldfield Copper Burning Demonstration
DESCRIPTION: \n \nJulie says “Weathering and burning drew me to experiment with metal sheets and the effects of chemistry\, heat and patination foundations that I then develop with traditional art materials.  The metal I’m using for this event will be copper. I use different metals for different effects.  My tool is a bonfire where I’ll be burning the copper sheet. Then I use acids and alkalis\, grinders\, scrapers\, pastels\, and natural weathering leaving my paintings outside to develop opening up surface possibilities. Working with science and nature in this way often gives unexpected results\, especially with the uneven heat of the fire and exposure.”\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nThe demonstration is free with entry to the Sculpture Park and will take place in the Riverside arena\, running for approximately 2 hours.  Limited places so please email the gallery to confirm your attendance.\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n Contact\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n For more information on Julie Oldfield\, Please click on the gallery button.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Gallery

Showing alongside the sculptures of Sculpture park co-founder Simon Gudgeon. \n\n\nIf you would like to view works by our other artists please let us know as we can arrange viewings by appointment.

DESCRIPTION:Escape the everyday and immerse yourself in a rejuvenating Saturday at Sculpture by the Lakes\, where art and nature intertwine to inspire serenity. Spend your day wandering through the breath-taking park\, surrounded by captivating sculptures and tranquil lakes\, allowing the beauty to quiet your mind and uplift your spirit. This transformative day will leave you refreshed\, reconnected\, and ready to embrace life with renewed calm and clarity.\n\n\n  \n\n\nSound Bath\n\n\n  \n\n\nA sound bath is typically a way of managing anxiety\, soothing the nervous system\, and blocking all the ideas and thoughts out of your consciousness as you connect with your body. Sound enters the healing equation from several directions: It may alter cellular functions through energetic effects; it may entrain biological systems to function more homeostatically; it may be calm the mind and therefore the body; or it may have emotional effects\, which influence neurotransmitters and neuropeptides\, which in turn help to regulate the immune system—the healer within.\n\n\n  \n\n\nChoose which sound bath you would like to attend on Relaxation Saturday and spend the remainder of the day exploring Sculpture by the Lakes. We look forward to welcoming you.\n\n\n

At one point\, I completely lost awareness of my body—truly profound! His beautiful use of Himalayan singing bowls (my favourites)\, especially around and over my body\, created a profound sense of calm and rest. The integration of various instruments\, each serving a unique purpose in the sound bath\, left me feeling weightless by the end.
