SUMMARY:Winter Tree Tour: Conifer Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our Conifer Collection is one of the central focusses of our Botanic Garden at Sculpture by the Lake. Of the estimated 60\,000 tree species in the world\, only 650 are conifers. This is because conifers are relics of evolution and had their heyday before the dinosaurs. For this reason many of our conifer collections are rare in the wild and some are under threat of extinction” \nOur first winter tree tour will take you back in history to the extraordinary bravery\, rivalry and pitfalls of the pioneer botanists of the 18th and 19th centuries who discovered many of the conifer species we rely on\, commercially\, today. In more recent years\, conifers only thought to exist as fossils have been found alive and rescued from the brink. The most exciting discoveries\, though\, are more scientific\, regarding the fascinating ways some conifers are adapted to nutrient-poor or water-logged soil\, and are prepared for wind\, and fire. There could be many reasons we still need conifers in the future. A key role of a botanic garden\, is to understand what trees will grow best\, with rising temperatures and increased adverse weather conditions. \nWe’ll end up in the Pod last\, with Andrew Lawrence\, our palaeontologist colleague who will bring in some fossils of plants to take us back to the deep past. Trees we might now think of as non-native might actually have lived closer to home once upon a time! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n 18th of February – 10.00am – 12.30pm\n  \nSpaces are limited to 8 people.\n  \nClick below to secure your place!\n  \nThis event is strictly for attendees aged 14 and over.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Book Here
